Literacy

To help our students reach the state and national literacy standards for the end of kindergarten, we use the Readers’ Workshop and Writers’ Workshop models of instruction.

Our students will be exposed to examples of a wide variety of print this year through daily read alouds, shared reading, and guided reading.  They will read independently at their level, increasing their fluency and accuracy as they improve their comprehension of what they have read.  They will be exposed to and understand increasingly complex text during daily read aloud time.  They will increase their ability to decode unknown words by applying different strategies, and they will recognize approximately twenty sight words.

Everyday students in kindergarten will produce written work.  During daily writers’ workshop, students will produce different types of writing.  They will respond to literature, write a personal narrative, write procedures, write reports, and write poetry.   Students will learn how to write by using Kidwriting, which is a way to stretch words to hear and write sounds.  They are given different strategies to help them write.

Mathematics

Using our Investigations program, we will explore patterns, counting, measuring, collecting data, and shapes.  Students will also learn to think mathematically, solve problems, and communicate verbally and in written form, the problem solving process.

Science

In Newport, we use KITES kits to reinforce the concepts in our science curriculum.  We have two kits to cover two of the standards of science:  life science and physical science.  Our first unit is life science and is entitled “Animals 2 by 2.”  We will focus on observing and questioning two different animals.  Then the students will compare and contrast the two.  Our second unit is physical science and is entitled “Marbles, Tracks, and Ramps.”  We will discover the movement of balls down tracks and ramps.  Students will experiment to see how this movement occurs.

 Social Studies

In kindergarten we explore ourselves as a part of our neighborhood and our community.  We learn what a neighborhood is and what they will find in a neighborhood.  We learn the difference between a neighborhood and a community.  We learn who our community helpers are and how we can help our community.
