Language Arts
The focus in 4h grade is on reading to learn. We concentrate on comprehension strategies such as making text connections, asking questions, visualizing, inferring, determining importance and synthesizing. We work in small flexible guided reading groups on these strategies. We will work on one strategy per month. In our writing workshop we will be writing in many different genres this year; personal narratives, report writing, realistic fiction, procedural writing, poetry to name a few. Fourth graders are required to read a minimum of 25 books this year. A fourth grade level book should contain at least 150 pages.

Math
Using our Investigations program we will explore many concepts such as improving our number sense (adding, subtracting, multiplication & dividing). This year new concepts for the students will be fractions, area & perimeter, statistics, and geometry just to name a few. We will also concentrate on our problem solving and communications in mathematics. At the beginning of each unit, watch for the parent information booklet to come home. This booklet outlines the unit and gives ideas support ideas for parents. To insure that the children are practicing their math facts, we will give weekly quizzes. Science
In Newport we use KITES kits to reinforce the concepts in our science curriculum. We have three kits this year to cover the three strands of science; eart life science and physical science. We have started the year with Earth Materials. In December, we will begin Electrical Circuits and end the year with Ecosystems beginning in March.

Social Studies
Our units for Social Studies are New England, The American Revolution and Westward Expansion. We have the pleasure of having education majors from Salve University teaching a portion of each unit with us once a week.

Homework
The district policy states that nightly homework should be about 40 minutes for fourth grade. (10 minutes x grade = number of minutes)
Homework is used to reinforce concepts taught in class. If for some reason you child is laboring over his/her homework for hours each night, please call for a meeting so we can correct this problem immediately.
