Literacy:

The Newport School District is working very diligently in helping our students to meet the state and national literacy standards.

Readers' and Writers' Workshop is being implemented at all grade levels. Very direct instruction along with modeling will be used for
instructional purposes during the mini-lessons of the workshops. The mini-lessons will be geared toward your child improving their reading and writing and to enhance their self-esteem. After mini-lessons are implemented students will then practice reading and writing in various genres throughout the year.

During Writers' Workshop students will focus mainly on personnel narratives, report writing, functional procedural writing or "How to..." pieces of writing, along with response to literature. Each student will produce at least ten to twelve published pieces by the end of the year.

During Readers' Workshop students will be reading at their instructional level supported by the classroom teacher and also at their independent level where little if any support is needed. Third grade students are asked to read at least thirty books by the end of the year. They may respond to literature or conference at the end of each book. Comprehension strategies, word attack strategies, and fluency will be taught and practiced.

Mathematics:

Newport Schools uses the Investigation Math Series. It is a hands-on approach teaching students to think logically and problem solve. Students spend more time exploring problems in depth, find more than one solution to problems, use various strategies to problem solve, and choose from a variety of hands on materials to solve problems. They also express their mathematical thinking through drawing, writing, and talking. They work as a whole class, in small groups, and independently. Math is related to their every day lives.

The grade three curriculum involves the students studying the Hispanics, Explorers, Rain forest, and Rhode Island. Map skills are covered as well.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday nights. It will usually consist of math and reading for twenty minutes each evening.
