Math:
Using Investigations math skills, concepts and problem solving are reviewed, introduced, and developed. Instruction varies from whole group, small cooperative groups, partners, and independent work. Math is taught in a hands-on and minds-on approach. Subject matter is made as relevant as possible to students’ lives.
Math Units include:
Coins, Coupons, and Combinations (The Number System);
Does It Walk, Crawl, or Swim? (Sorting and Classifying);
Shapes, Halves, and Symmetry (Geometry and Fractions);
Putting Together and Taking Apart (Addition and Subtraction);
How Long? How Far? (Measuring);
How Many Pockets? How Many Teeth? (Collecting and Representing Data); Timelines and Rhythm Patterns (Representing Time).
In each unit, students explore the central topics in depth through a series of investigations, gradually encountering and using many important mathematical ideas. Rather than working through a textbook or workbook, doing page-by-page exercises, students are actively engaged in working with materials and with their peers to solve larger mathematical problems.

Science:
Although science, social studies and health are integrated throughout each day’s schedule through literature and various activities, we spend time focused on thinking and skill development in each specific area. A hands-on approach is implemented to teach and develop skills in this area. Using KITES, the second grade science themes are Pebbles, Sand, and Silt, Simple Machines, and Insects.
