Literacy

To help our students reach the state and national literacy standards for the end of first grade, we use the Readers Workshop and Writers Workshop models of instruction.

Our students will be exposed to examples of a wide variety of print this year.  They will read independently at their level, increasing their fluency and accuracy as they improve their comprehension of what they have read.  They will be exposed to and understand increasingly complex text during daily read aloud time.  They will increase their ability to decode unknown words by applying different strategies, and they will recognize many more words by sight (approximately 150 by the end of the year!).  Most importantly, by the end of first grade, students should have developed a love of reading that will be life long!

During the first grade, students will produce written work everyday, either independently, or with others.  During the daily writers workshop, students will produce many different pieces for various purposes.  Students will expand their ability to express their ideas in writing, relying less on illustrations to communicate ideas.  Students will move away from invented spelling as their phonics skills become more ingrained.  Students will also become more aware of punctuation, and begin to use it in their work.

Mathematics

Our mathematics curriculum emphasizes literacy, conventions, problem solving, and communications.  Students learn to think, solve problems, and communicate about their process.  In addition, each unit begins with an introduction letter sent home to families, explaining the focus of the unit and offering helpful tips for supporting your young mathematician.
Our units are listed below:

Mathematical Thinking (introduction)
Building Number Sense (the number systems)
Survey Questions and Secret Rules (collecting and sorting data)
Quilt Squares and Block Towns (2-D and 3-D Geometry)
Number Games and Story Problems (addition and subtraction)
Bigger, Taller, Heavier, Smaller (measuring)

Science

Our science curriculum is standards based.  We will complete three units this year as described below:
Unit 1:  Life Science ? we will focus on a study of organisms, learning that:
All organisms have basic needs.
All organisms have a life cycle.
Humans are organisms.
Unit 2:  Earth Science ? we will learn about weather changes that are both observable and measurable by wind direction, temperature changes, speed, and precipitation.
Unit 3:  Physical Science ? we will study movement in objects, either as they remain in one place, or change their location.

Social Studies

In first grade we will be expanding our perspective from thinking of ourselves as part of a local community to learning about our identity as citizens of the USA.  We will learn to identify national symbols and landmarks.  We will also focus on learning more about our local surroundings, with a unit that explores the Geography of Newport.
