Updating Your Systems
For those wishing to update their MACs with OS X, please follow the recommendations below. MAC Users: In several of the elementary schools, the available Internet bandwidth is less than the download speed offered at the Apple.com web site. What usually happens during a MAC Update is that the download of updates exceeds the available bandwidth causing a disruption of the Internet access of that entire school. Eventually we hope to have a centralized update server for MACs in the future that will alleviate this issue. Until this is resolved, the Tech Department recommends that you start your MAC Updates just before you leave at the end of the school day or access a CD from the Tech Department with the current updates already downloaded. With all computers, it is highly recommended that if these machines are left unattended to complete an update, PLEASE lock the classroom where the computer is stationed to prevent unauthorized access.
For those operating computers running Microsoft Windows please use the following instructions: Thompson Middle School: You are OK to run Windows Update for any service other than Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you need this update, it is best updated by someone from the Tech Department. Other schools: If you need XP Service Pack 2 installed on your computer, please contact the Tech Department. If you are doing other updates it is recommended that you start these updates after the school day is over.
