2007-2008 SCHOOL COMMITTEE GOALS
- Continue supporting all efforts to comply with Federal “NCLB” and State Article 18 requirements, and improve student achievement in the following areas:
- All schools will meet the 21 targets for compliance;
- We will reduce the district drop-out rate by 25%;
- We will increase the number of schools designated high performing;
- We will reduce the number of schools designated low performing;
- We will have no schools designated in need of improvement;
- Continue to pursue “higher expectations” and thereby assure that all students be challenged to perform at their highest potential;
- Continue to advance the plan for “Fewer, Newer Schools” to establish facilities that address the needs of education in the 21st century;
- Establish an educational program such as a Third Grade academy for students whose literacy and mathematic achievements are not adequate to enter the fourth grade;
- Establish an Alternative Education protocol;
- Explore efforts to enhance curriculum by exploring innovative avenues of access, (e.g., online access, inter-district collaboration, concurrent enrollment, etc.);
- Continue to produce a realistic, educationally sound, cost-effective budget that supports district goals, presented in a format that is transparent, easily understood and professionally presented to the citizens of Newport;
- Continue to support initiatives to improve Guidance Services at Rogers High School;
- Encourage and support career and technical education.
- To review and analyze the number and nature of calls to service to our buildings by police and fire and the reasons for these calls.
