SPECIAL EDUCATION
The Special Education Department provides
a continuum of services to meet the needs of students who
have Individual Educations Plans (IEPs), including, but not
limited to, consultation, collaborative classes, behavioral
supports and plans, academic support, and intensive
classes. The philosophy of the Newport School Department
and Rogers High School is to pursue inclusion to the extent
that it is appropriate. With this in mind, students with an
IEP are enrolled in regular education classes whenever
appropriate after careful review of their academic records
and individual learning strengths and weaknesses. Intensive
courses are designed to address specific learning
disabilities of the students enrolled by providing the
appropriate accommodations and teaching strategies to allow
these students the opportunity to learn and meet graduation
requirements. Intensive classes, taught by Special
Education teachers and Para-educators, are offered in Math,
English, and Life Skills Transition. Also, collaborative
classes taught by teams of regular and Special Education
teachers are offered across the curriculum. Our resource
program includes an Academic Lab to help students meet
their standards based on IEP goals.
The Special Education Department is committed to assisting
students with disabilities to earn the best education
possible to prepare them for life after high school. With
that goal in mind the department offers a series of courses
that meet the academic and personal needs of those students
and makes every effort to enroll the student into the least
restrictive educational environment possible. Placement
into courses is done with special emphasis on prior
demonstrated performance and evaluation of the students’
capabilities.
