Rogers High School changed the framework and organization
of its counseling program in 2005. Mrs. Patricia DiCenso
assumed the role of Principal of the high school in August
2005. Her former position as the Assistant Principal and
Director of Guidance at North Kingstown High School, Rhode
Island enabled her to assess the program at Rogers and
change the organization structure, and framework at Rogers.
Mrs. DiCenso's knowledge and membership in RISCA (Rhode
Island School Counselor Association) and ASCA (American
School Counselor Association) provided the foundation to
change the model of the guidance delivery services at the
high school.
The profession of school counseling has changed based on
the nationally recognized work of Dr. C. D. Johnson and
Dr.Sharon Johnson. Mrs. DiCenso changed the structure,
roles, and responsibilities of the counselors to align to
the RISCA and ASCA models, and has continually supervised
and monitored the program. The counseling program at Rogers
High School is now a standards-driven, results based
program.
The new guidance program has been revamped to align itself
with the district’s strategic plan, Rogers high school
mission statement, the school's School Improvement Plan and
the adherence to the new diploma system for Rhode Island.
The model serves students by having school counselors teach
lessons in the academic, social, and personal domain based
on grade appropriate standards. Additionally the counselors
have used Advisories for their delivery system and
integrate the comprehensive guidance program with state
standards.

Conceptual
Framework
The ASCA National Model: A
Framework for School Counseling Programs (ASCA, 2003). The
model provides a national vision for comprehensive school
counseling programs. Two of the most important goals for
realizing this vision are:
• All students will achieve the standards in the ASCA
National Model.
• Comprehensive school counseling programs will be
implemented in school districts throughout the country.
Rhode Island school counselors are committed to helping
realize the ASCA vision by implementing school counseling
programs throughout the state that are results-based,
standards-based, data-driven, developmental and
comprehensive.
The following table provides an overview of the key terms
used in describing a transformed school counseling
program.
