ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Students will use
English to participate in social interaction for personal
expressions and enjoyment and when speaking and writing.
Students will use English to obtain and express information
at each level.
Students will
demonstrate the acquisition of a body of knowledge
by:
- Reading for understanding in English at each level.
- Organizing ideas for written and oral expression.
- Interpreting information.
- Expressing an awareness of the cultures of people who speak English.
- Responding to the works
of others.
- Using the language to express themselves in writing and speaking.
- Understanding and responding appropriately in a variety of settings.
- Reading for understanding.
- Using culturally appropriate forms of expression.
- Demonstrating knowledge
through application in a variety of contexts at each

Students will demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the rights and responsibilities necessary to learn, live, and work in culturally diverse and democratic society by:

appreciation of English speaking cultures.
1 Credit – Grades 9-12
This course is designed for students will little previous study of English who score below the 10th percentile in reading.
The purpose of the course is to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English. The focus is on language needed for survival in the United States culture as well as the language needed for success in academic courses.
Prerequisite: Placement test

This course is designed for students who have previously studied English as a second language. The overall purpose of the course is to improve students’ skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing in English. While assignments are somewhat individualized in order to focus on the needs of the students, the reading focus on American cultures as well as literature from other English speaking cultures.
Prerequisite: Placement test
1 Credit – Grades 9-12
This course is designed for students who are about to make the transition to mainstream English 9-12 classes or who choose to take this course along with a mainstream course. The purpose of the course is to refine listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. The course requires that students do library research, as well as oral and written reports.
