This course is designed to acquaint the individual with as
many methods or media as possible for expressing an idea.
Emphasis will be on the process of design, as well as the
elements and principles that make up design and good
composition. Each student is required to keep a detailed
journal and sketchbook, participate in class critiques, and
complete a written reflection at the end of each
assignment.

This course is a continuation of Fine Arts 1 with added
emphasis on composition and design. Assignments will vary
considerably in that certain techniques will require more
self-discipline, while others will allow a greater degree
of artistic freedom. Each student is required to keep a
detailed journal and sketchbook, participate in class
critiques, and complete a written reflection at the end of
each assignment.
Prerequisite:
Minimum grade of C- in Fine Arts 1 or instructor’s
approval.
FINE ARTS

Semester Course – Grades 10 – 12
This course is designed especially for students who plan to
further their art education. Using the knowledge gained in
Fine Arts 1 and 2 students will explore at a higher level
specific areas of art with a greater degree of involvement
and independent exploration. Each student is required to
keep a detailed journal and sketchbook, participate in
class critiques, and complete a written reflection at the
end of each assignment.
Prerequisite:
Minimum grade of C in Fine Arts 2 or instructor’s
approval.
PORTFOLIO/GIFTED
AND TALENTED #029

Grades 11 – 12
This is a course specifically designed for students who
have demonstrated evidence of higher artistic achievement,
coupled with a strong desire for involvement in the visual
arts. Students will work in multiple medias, including
drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Students will
also develop a portfolio of art works suitable for college
admission. Students will learn how to present a portfolio
for consideration, including but not limited to the
following techniques: duplication of the portfolio via 35mm
slides and/or DVD digital photographs. Each student is
required to keep a detailed journal and sketchbook,
participate in class critiques, and complete a written
reflection at the end of each assignment.
Prerequisite:
Minimum grade of C in Fine Arts 1, 2, and 3 and/or
instructor’s approval.
POTTERY

Semester Course – Grades 10 – 12
This course is a basic course in hand-building methods
using clay and glazes. Students will survey the history and
aesthetics of the use of clay in society, as well as
producing their own clay objects/vessels. Emphasis is
placed on the development of form and its relationship to
functional and non-functional objects. Students will be
encouraged to “step outside the box” to creatively develop
new uses of ceramic clay. Each student is required to keep
a detailed journal and sketchbook, participate in class
critiques, and complete a written reflection at the end of
each assignment.
Prerequisite:
Minimum grade of C in Fine Arts 1, Fine Arts 2 and/or
instructor’s approval.
POTTERY

Semester Course – Grades 10 – 12
This course is a continuation of Pottery 1 with advanced
methods in hand- building as well as throwing on the wheel.
Students will continue to survey the history and aesthetics
of the use of clay in society, as well as producing their
own complex clay objects/vessels. Each student is required
to keep a detailed journal and sketchbook, participate in
class critiques, and complete a written reflection at the
end of each assignment.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in
Fine Arts 1, Fine Arts 2, Pottery 1 and/or instructor’s
approval.
MUSE - MUSEUM
STUDIES #035
.5 Credit –
Grades 11-12 – Independent Study
This course is open to students interested in all aspects
of museum/gallery operations. The Newport Art Museum, along
with art educators will bring together a variety of art
museum professionals who are associated with museum
careers. Students will explore various types of museums
with attention to the role played by curators, education
directors, registrars, librarians, plant managers and
endowment specialists. The curriculum will include
administrators, curatorial explorations, art education and
marketing. This course will fulfill outreach and community
service requirements with a culminating exhibition at the
Newport Art Museum. This class is an independent study and
will include many off-site visits. Instructions will be
held in conjunction with Middletown and Portsmouth art
programs.
Prerequisite: Fine Arts 2 and
instructor’s approval.
