Newport School Committee Goals—2011
Improve student proficiency and graduation rates.
- Meet or exceed Newport proficiency targets at all grade levels as outlined in Race To the Top scope of work.
- Continue to emphasize and support achievement of math proficiency goals district wide for all students.
- Monitor progress at all grade levels via communications with administration.
- Provide the teaching staff the support required to utilize data to improve instruction and student achievement.
- Realign school day to achieve goal of extended learning time.
- Review and revise the academic program at Thompson Middle School based on results.
- Implement a school uniform policy for elementary and middle schools.
- End the use of cluster organization for classroom scheduling at Thompson Middle School.
- Eliminate the placement of teachers based on seniority.
- Implement a teacher evaluation process that includes measures of student growth.
- Reduce student absenteeism rates at all grade levels.
Deliver high quality Pell School on time and within budget.
Provide a smooth transition for Sullivan School students throughout the construction process. Make the academic program transition a priority for the Pell School. Involve the community and Newport Public School employees in design and building of the Pell School. Include renewable energy components in the Pell School design. Provide information updates to the public on the project. Raise funds for an endowment to address future school needs including technology replacement and horticultural upkeep. Develop a balanced budget that invests resources wisely.
Develop zero based budget for 2011-2012 school year using the RIDE Basic Education Program as a planning guide. Reduce per student costs relative to other Rhode Island school districts. Allocate 1% of operating budget to capital improvement projects. Negotiate fair and equitable contracts with TAN and Council 94. Enhance community involvement in Newport Public Schools.
Increase parental involvement. Involve parents and community in our efforts to eliminate bullying. Include all demographic groups in the city in public awareness campaigns. Continue to work to improve the public perception of Newport Public Schools through the use of various media sources. Address use of appropriate interpreter services. Improve professional communications with government representatives including the Newport City Council, Newport’s delegation to the Rhode Island legislature and Rhode Island’s representatives to the United States Congress. Be aware of major evaluation instruments and grading procedures so that discussions with constituents and educators will have clarity and understanding. Collaborate with other school districts.
Complete implementation of East Bay Educational Collaborative Science Curriculum Project Participate in Aquidneck Island school regionalization discussions. Continue to investigate factors related to regionalization including educational, financial, social and governmental. Support placement of a binding or non binding referendum for a regionalized school district on the 2012 ballot. Adopted: 01-11-11
